Hello to our #FoodieFriends! We are back with another Bermunchies review. This time we recieved a submission from a good friend of ours named Patrick Canton who wined and dined at the lovely Bouchée Bistro for Bermuda Restaurant Weeks and it's safe to say that we are now drolling over our computer screen! Take a read then go on and try them for yourselves!!

Bouchée Bistro

After looking at the various menus, my ladies chose Bouchée for the first site for restaurant week. There was some trepidation, as we had loved going there for dinner while the Simmons brothers ran it, but weren't fans of the new menu after the change. But we were keen on the listed choices, and the value for money seemed exceptional. The ladies were more attractive than the food, but that's not unusual!

We started off with an excellent crusty French loaf and warm salted butter, and a Loire Valley Sancerre white wine to open our palates. Appetizers came really quickly. My wife and I both had the escargot, while my daughter had the Caesar salad. The snails were perfect, tender, juicy, the shaved garlic and Brie added some complexity. The Caesar was light, lettuce was fresh and crisp, boiled eggs were a nice touch. (The fact that the Caesar was removed from the menu when the restaurant changed was a huge none of content in for my daughter, so she was pleased to have it back, and said it should always be on the menu!)

The main courses swiftly followed. I had the Poulet Roti, and it was exceptional. The herbed jus was an interesting blend of savoury, with hints of sweetness and smokiness poking through. The chicken was tender and moist, and the caramelized skin was crispy and almost like a  sweet bacon. The vegetables were good, especially the roasted potatoes with herbs and onions and olive oil and multiple layers of flavour. The cubed squash and steamed asparagus also were fresh and tasty, although my preference would have been for grilled to balance the chicken. The Sancerre was an excellent choice, if a bit expensive, as a full bodied white to work with the bolder flavours.

My wife had the salmon in béarnaise sauce. Haven't had salmon that moist and tender since our Alaska trip eight years ago. There was a lovely light layering of flavours- really, really good. The vegetables were the same as mine. My daughter had the pates avec citron. On the first glance, this would have been the simplest entree, just chicken pasta in a cream sauce. But that would be incorrect. Again, you could taste the layering of the flavours, at times blending, at times distinct. It was exceptional for a simple dish. It's not often that she cleans her plate, but there was no trace left, and it was a healthy portion.

Now, on to dessert. My daughter and I both ordered the molten chocolate cake, wife ordered crème brûlée, we all had cappuccino. The cake was good, nice and rich, the ice cream had good flavour too. Fresh strawberries garnish provided nice tartness. Good, maybe even better than good, but not exceptional. The crème brûlée was very, very good. Perfect caramel crust,  smooth custard, just firm enough. Lovely light flavours.

Cappuccino balanced the desserts and capped the night off perfectly and was very smooth, not bitter at all. We went into this dinner with some bittersweet nostalgia over "the good old days" of Bouchée that we were wistful for, and came away with a new appreciation for the current menu. Very enjoyable overall and the service was good too.
