Casa Bacardi - Celebrating 50 Years in Bermuda

By @Reesafoodie Casa Bacardi - Celebrating 50 Years in Bermuda

The BERMUNCHIES team was recently invited to join in on exclusive rum tasting at the special Bacardi pop-up store called ‘Casa Bacardi’. Our newest team member Sharee joined in and blogged a bit about the entire experience.

Stepping into Casa Bacardi was like stepping into a tropical oasis; as if an old wine cellar met a beach bar. Something about the wooden floors and the decorative cocktail recipes on the ceiling and walls, the warm red leather chairs that begged for you to sit and sip slowly on a glass of Reserve, and the staff in Bermuda shorts and straw hats.

We met with Mr. Alvin Harvey the Bacardi Brand Manager at Burrows Lightbourn. After about 10 minutes of introductions and serving a couple of customers, Mr. Harvey started our tasting.

We stood around a barrel where he had placed glasses and a bottle of Limited Edition Bacardi Reserve. Mr. Harvey explained to us that this special Reserve blend was available years ago but was taken off of the market. However Bacardi decided to revive the recipe for the 50th Anniversary in Bermuda. This particular reserve was so amazingly smooth, I was slightly shocked. I've never had reserve before, let alone drank rum by itself other than shots at a bar, and I really enjoyed it!

Mr. Harvey and his protégé schooled us on the history of rum and how centuries ago rum was actually a luxury enjoyed by army officers who were only allowed one shot per. They also explained to us that the popular drink Mojito, translated as "Cast a little spell", came about as a way for them to mask the taste of the rum using raw sugar cane.

Before the tasting ended, I purchased my own bottle of the Limited Edition Bacardi Reserve retailing at $50 a bottle, and I also purchased the "Cooking with Bacardi" cookbook by Stan Jones- can’t wait to start using it!

The popup is located on the corner of Queen and Reid Street and will be open until July 15th. There is a limit of 3 bottles of Reserve per customer with a large part of the proceeds going to CADA who encourage responsible alcohol behavior.
